What We Do

Prayer, learning, and friendship, all year round.

MSA’s life on campus runs across seven areas. Some happen daily, some weekly, and some only once a year. Together they are how our community gathers, grows, and looks out for one another at Michigan Tech.

Worship

Worship

Five Daily Prayers

The five daily prayers, prayed at the MSA Community Center, our masjid, in congregation when people are there. Everyone is welcome to join us. See the current schedule on our prayer times page.

Worship

Friday Sermon (Jumu’ah)

Jumu’ah, the Friday congregational prayer, with a sermon followed by the prayer. It is the centerpiece of our week and the first thing most new students look for.

Education

Education

Men’s Weekly Halaqah

A weekly halaqah, or study circle, for the brothers: a relaxed space to read, discuss, and learn together over the course of the semester. Fridays after Maghrib at the Community Center.

Education

Ladies’ Halaqah

A halaqah for the sisters, run by and for the women of our community: a warm gathering for study and friendship. Sisters, message us for the next date, and the board will add you to our private, sisters-only WhatsApp group.

Education

Sunday Children’s Madrasa

A Sunday school for the children of our community, where the youngest members of the Keweenaw’s Muslim families learn the basics in a friendly setting. It’s on pause for now, and we’re working to bring it back.

Ramadan Iftars

Community iftars (the meal that breaks the fast at sunset), held every Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Ramadan so no one breaks their fast alone, far from home.

Nightly taraweeh prayers during Ramadan, prayed together at the Community Center after the evening prayer.

Ramadan

Grand Iftar

Our largest gathering of the year: a community-wide iftar that brings students, families, and friends of MSA together at one table.

Graduate Farewell

A send-off for our graduating students and a chance to celebrate everything they’ve given the community before they head out into the world.

Social

Picnics & Potlucks

Picnics and potlucks through the year: good food, fresh Keweenaw air, and the everyday friendship that holds the community together.

Chicago Grocery Run

A periodic group trip to Chicago for halal groceries and supplies you can’t find in the Keweenaw. It’s one of the practical ways we look after each other up here.
