Financial Life in the U.S. Workshop
- Date:
- Time: 5 PM ET
- Place: MUB Ballroom B1

Our Financial Literacy Series with Breakwater Federal Credit Union opened with a free, practical introduction to banking in the United States for students and families.
The workshop was built for anyone still getting used to banking in America, especially international students and families new to the country, and the whole Michigan Tech community was welcome. Donuts and drinks were waiting, and the welcome slide encouraged questions at any point.
Breakwater Federal Credit Union led the session. One part covered online and mobile banking: checking balances and recent transactions, moving money between your accounts, and depositing checks with a phone.
On the agenda
- Choosing a bank or credit union
- Understanding bank accounts
- Opening and managing your account
- Everyday banking in the U.S.
The Keweenaw Report shared news of the partnership the same day, and the series continued on October 8 with a workshop on building, using, and protecting credit. Thank you to Breakwater Federal Credit Union for sharing their expertise with our community, to Dunkin’ for the treats, and to everyone who joined us.
